Eight people. A before and an after meeting Jesus.

They are different kinds of distance: the distance of pain, of judgment, of time. And one that almost never gets told: the distance of someone who grew up inside.

The suitcase she didn’t know she had

Oasis group · moving through grief

Before
She arrived convinced her pain was permanent. She wasn’t trying to heal: she was trying to endure. “I thought it was something I would never get past. I kept telling myself that maybe, with time, something would lighten, but deep down I thought it would always hurt just as much.”
The breaking point
She joined Oasis, one of the short term groups. That season, more than 80 people signed up for a group: men, women, grief, finances, marriages. Hers lasted a few weeks.
Today
She finished the group and started serving. Today she describes her grief as a part of herself that she honors in the way she lives, not as a wound she manages.

It was like opening the windows of my soul and letting in a new way of seeing things. A more compassionate way, a more hopeful one.

A place where you can doubt out loud

Starting Point · 30th season

Before
He arrived suspecting he’d be sized up. It’s the most common suspicion among people who come back after a bad experience: that you have to change first in order to belong.
The breaking point
Starting Point is the environment where you explore faith by talking, not listening. That campus closed its 30th season this year.
Today
He stayed. And what he said at the end is the real metric of the environment we’re building.

It felt like a safe place, a place I could really trust, where I could say the deepest things about myself without feeling judged or questioned. My heart felt really cared for.

Fifty-five years outside

Steve

Before
Steve spent 55 years without setting foot in a church. And it wasn’t a crisis of faith: it was distance that piled up, the kind of absence that becomes an identity and that no one expects to break.
The breaking point
One Sunday at vidain and, after that, an invitation to a small group. Nothing extraordinary: exactly the design we repeat consistently every week.
Today
He joined a small group, and his groupmates ended up recognizing him as the most diligent member. 55 years after he walked away.

It’s never too late to come back in. That’s the point of everything we do.

The voice that brought a whole family

Michelle

Before
Her aunt Adriana had spent years inviting the family: her brother Jorge, her sister-in-law, her nieces and nephews, her parents. They never came. Until Michelle’s home broke apart and she was left in the middle of it, heartbroken.
The breaking point
Michelle moved in with Adriana, who had always been her safe place. Tagging along with Adriana, she showed up at vidain one Sunday, not looking for anything. She liked it and came back. Three or four weeks later someone sent in a video of her singing; that same Thursday she was auditioning for the band.
Today
The music team became her refuge: that’s where she rebuilt her identity and found out God loved her. She made peace with her dad and moved back home. The first Sunday she sang on stage, Jorge came to see her: it was the first time he had ever set foot in vidain, and he brought his other kids. After that he came back every time she sang, until that became his way of attending. And when Michelle took part in the Christmas special, her grandfather showed up too — the one who had resisted church the most — to watch her sing.

Michelle, with her voice, has brought that whole family to church. She’s a whole new person now, with a healthy identity in Jesus.

Three churches didn’t know where to put him

Edgar

Before
Edgar used to go to church. After his divorce he disconnected completely. When he tried to come back, he went to three different churches. None of them put him on a team. Nobody gave him anything to do. Like they didn’t know what to do with him.
The breaking point
A friend invited him to vidain. He hadn’t been assigned a place to serve yet, and he was already saying this out loud.
Today
Today he’s reconnected, serving actively and excited about the vision. His story says less about him than about how hard it is to come back when nobody makes room for you.

I’m falling in love with Jesus again. I’m warming up to the church again.

Came to watch a soccer game

Before
They had never walked into a church. They had no reason to.
The breaking point
Their campus opened the auditorium to screen Mexico’s World Cup games. It wasn’t spur of the moment: it’s part of the strategy of being a church for its city, a building with open doors rather than a temple.
Today
They showed up for a volunteer interview. When asked how long they’d been coming, they said this. Today they serve.

I first came to watch a Mexico game… and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Grew up inside and still far away

Roby Romero

Before
Roby has been at vidain, as she puts it, “for as long as I can remember.” And even so, she spent years struggling with her faith. She was after other people’s approval: compliments gave her a satisfaction that faded fast. “There was a part of me that didn’t feel whole.”
The breaking point
She started making friends in the student environment. There she met mentors and people who — in her words — looked after her without criticizing her and loved her as she was, without wanting anything from her.
Today
She says she had never had a place where she felt safe, and that now she does. Her read on church turned around: it stopped being a place you attend. “It’s not neutral, it doesn’t take from you: it adds to you as a person.” Today she serves, and she thanks by name the people who made it possible.

Thank you to all the volunteers, the mentors, and everyone behind vidain. You’ve left a mark on my life and on my generation.

She looked for answers in the stars

Priscila

Before
She’s the youngest in her family and, in her own words, never went without anything material. From the outside it looked like she had it all. Inside she carried a constant sadness she decided to keep to herself. As a teenager she tried to fill that emptiness on her own and fell into habits that numbed the pain for a while. While her parents were moving toward God, she pulled away; she got to the point of doubting he existed.
The breaking point
Her sisters invited her to vidain. She went without much interest and with plenty of doubts, but something stuck: that God wasn’t someone out of reach, but a father who wanted a real relationship with her. Even so, she kept looking elsewhere — in the stars, in crystals, in symbols — and the more she looked, the more desperate she felt.
Today
One day she talked to God with no rehearsed words and no masks, and for the first time she felt at peace. She came back to vidain, joined Starting Point — where she could ask anything — and later a small group. Being around people going through something similar made the difference. She got baptized.

It was like being thirsty and getting drops of water that never quenched anything.
